Recommended Tank Setup for Blue Cherry Shrimp

Blue Cherry Shrimp are quite flexible but still appreciate a stable, shrimp‑friendly setup:

Tank size: From 20L+ for a starter group
Substrate: Inert or shrimp‑friendly substrate; dark colours help the blue stand out
Décor: Driftwood, rocks, leaf litter and plenty of live plants (mosses are ideal)
Filtration: Sponge filter or pre‑filtered intake to protect shrimplets
Lighting: Low to moderate, enough to support plant and algae growth

Providing lots of surface area and hiding spots helps Blue Cherry Shrimp feel secure and boosts survival of baby shrimp.

Water Parameters (Guide Only)

Unlike more sensitive Caridina species, Blue Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina) are more forgiving and suit a wider range of tap water conditions:

Temperature: around 20–26°C
pH: typically 6.5–7.8 (slightly acidic to slightly alkaline)
Hardness: low to medium hardness is usually fine
Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm at all times
Nitrate: kept low with regular water changes and good plant growth

Stable parameters and slow changes are more important than chasing exact numbers for Blue Cherry Shrimp.

Feeding Blue Cherry Shrimp

Blue Cherry Shrimp spend most of their time grazing on biofilm, algae and detritus. Supplement this natural food with:

Quality shrimp pellets, wafers or granules
Occasional blanched vegetables (e.g. zucchini, spinach, cucumber)
Specialized shrimp mineral and biofilm foods

Feed lightly – only what they can finish in a few hours – to avoid overloading the tank. A varied diet helps Blue Cherry Shrimp maintain strong colour and good breeding activity.

Tank Mates and Compatibility

Blue Cherry Shrimp are peaceful and work well in calm community tanks:
