Seachem Prime 50 mL is a concentrated water conditioner designed for aquarium start-up, routine water changes and other situations where tap water is being introduced to an aquarium. According to Seachem, Prime removes chlorine and chloramine and also detoxifies ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. It is suitable for both freshwater and marine aquariums and is non-acidic, so it will not alter pH when used as directed.

Why Prime is useful during regular aquarium maintenance

Tap water can contain disinfectants that need to be treated before the water is safe for aquarium livestock. Prime addresses chlorine and chloramine while also binding ammonia, nitrite and nitrate into non-toxic forms that remain available for removal by the biological filter. Seachem also states that Prime detoxifies heavy metals found in tap water at typical concentration levels. This makes it useful as a single concentrated conditioner when preparing replacement water or filling a new aquarium.

How to dose Seachem Prime

The standard manufacturer dose is 5 mL for every 200 L of new water. For smaller amounts, Seachem notes that each thread inside the cap is approximately 1 mL. Prime may be added directly to the aquarium, although Seachem recommends adding it to the new water first where practical. When dosing directly into an aquarium, calculate the dose from the aquarium's full volume rather than only the amount of replacement water.

Higher-dose situations and practical cautions

Seachem states that a double dose may be used for exceptionally high chloramine concentrations and that up to five times the normal dose may be used to detoxify nitrite in an emergency. If water temperature is above 30 C and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, Seachem advises using a half dose. A sulphur-like smell is normal for Prime and is not, by itself, an indication that the product has spoiled.
