Bee shrimp and many Caridina shrimp are commonly maintained in softer, slightly acidic aquarium conditions rather than the harder, more alkaline conditions preferred by some other freshwater shrimp.

Nature Shrimp Soil is designed specifically around this type of aquarium environment. The soil helps maintain water at a slightly acidic level, making it particularly relevant when setting up aquariums for bee shrimp and other shrimp kept under similar conditions.

Because shrimp requirements vary between species and strains, always match your GH, KH, pH and other water parameters to the shrimp you intend to keep rather than relying on substrate alone.

A Substrate for Beneficial Bacteria

A healthy shrimp aquarium is about much more than the substrate's appearance.

Nature Shrimp Soil provides an environment where beneficial bacteria and other microorganisms can establish. These microorganisms form an important part of a mature shrimp aquarium and can also provide a natural grazing source for shrimp.

This makes the substrate particularly useful when building a biologically mature shrimp setup where stable water conditions, filtration and established microbial life are priorities.

Suitable for Planted Shrimp Aquariums

Nature Shrimp Soil isn't only about the shrimp.

The substrate also supports aquatic plant growth by providing a suitable environment for roots to establish. Beneficial bacterial activity within the substrate can assist nutrient availability for plants, supporting healthy root development and plant growth.

2–4mm Granules

This version uses 2–4mm granules, providing a versatile substrate size for general shrimp aquariums and planted layouts.

The granules can be shaped to create different substrate depths and contours throughout the aquascape while providing room for plant roots to establish.

For delicate foreground planting or very small carpeting plants, a finer powder-type soil may be easier to plant into.

Setting Up a Shrimp Aquarium

When using an active shrimp soil, the substrate should be considered one part of the complete aquarium system.

After setting up the aquarium, allow sufficient time for the aquarium to cycle and mature before adding shrimp. Test the water rather than assuming that the substrate alone has created suitable conditions.

• KH
• Ammonia
• Nitrite
• Nitrate
• Temperature

Only introduce shrimp once the aquarium is biologically established and the water parameters are appropriate and stable for the species you intend to keep.

For Caridina and other specialised shrimp, don't choose a substrate based only on the words “shrimp soil”.

Start with the requirements of the shrimp you plan to keep, then build the aquarium around those requirements. Substrate, remineralisation, source water, filtration and maintenance all work together to determine the final water conditions.

Nature Shrimp Soil is particularly relevant to bee shrimp and similar shrimp that favour slightly acidic conditions. It should not be assumed to be the ideal substrate for every freshwater shrimp species simply because it is marketed as shrimp soil.
