A good planted aquarium starts below the surface.

Nature Soil contains fully fermented organic compost incorporated into durable soil granules. This gives rooted aquarium plants access to nutrients directly through the substrate while providing a structure in which their root systems can establish.

The soil is designed to encourage vigorous rooting and healthy plant development, making it suitable for a wide range of commonly kept aquatic plants.

Its dark appearance also creates an attractive contrast against green and red plants, hardscape and livestock, helping create a more natural-looking aquascape.

Controlled Nutrient Release

One of the challenges when establishing a new planted aquarium is providing enough nutrition for new plants without releasing excessive nutrients into the water column.

Nature Soil is designed to release its nutrients gradually. This provides ongoing nutrition for plants while helping reduce the sudden nutrient release that can contribute to algae problems during the early stages of a planted aquarium.

As with any new aquascape, appropriate lighting, filtration, water changes and overall nutrient management remain important while the aquarium establishes.

A Substrate That Supports Biological Activity

The granulated structure does more than hold your plants in position.

Nature Soil provides surface area and spaces within the substrate where beneficial microorganisms can establish, making the substrate part of the aquarium's overall biological environment.

2–4 mm Granules for Aquascaping

This version of Nature Soil uses 2–4 mm granules, making it the standard-sized option for general planted aquarium use.

The granules are easy to work with when creating substrate contours and planting larger rooted aquarium plants. They can also be used to build depth from the front to the back of an aquascape, helping create perspective while providing adequate substrate around plant root systems.

For very fine carpeting plants or highly detailed foreground planting, a finer powder-type aquarium soil may be preferable.

Aquarium Haven Tip

When planning a planted aquarium, don't spread your soil perfectly flat unless the aquascape specifically calls for it.

Building the substrate slightly higher towards the back of the aquarium can create greater visual depth while also providing deeper substrate for larger background plants and their root systems.

Once planted, fill the aquarium carefully to avoid unnecessarily disturbing the soil and freshly positioned plants.
