ASF L'Unidose Algae Control – A Biological Approach to Aquarium Algae
Unwanted algae and cyanobacteria can quickly affect the appearance of a freshwater aquarium. While manual cleaning can remove visible growth, maintaining a balanced aquarium environment is important for preventing recurring problems.
ASF L'Unidose Algae Control – Up to 150L is a bacterial treatment programme developed by Aquarium Systems in collaboration with Dr Tim's Aquatics.
Rather than simply targeting visible algae, this programme introduces beneficial bacteria that compete for nutrients used by algae and cyanobacteria.
The aim is to help restore a healthier biological balance and manage the conditions that encourage unwanted growth.
Why Choose ASF L'Unidose Algae Control?
-
Biological algae management – uses beneficial bacteria to help manage unwanted algae.
-
Targets cyanobacteria – developed for aquariums experiencing algae and cyanobacteria problems.
-
Nutrient competition – introduces bacteria that consume nutrients associated with unwanted growth.
-
Supports biological balance – helps restore beneficial microbial activity.
-
Convenient single-dose vials – no complicated measuring required.
-
Step-by-step treatment programme – follow the included dosing schedule.
-
Developed with Dr Tim's Aquatics – uses a bacteria-based approach to aquarium maintenance.
-
Freshwater formulation – designed for freshwater aquariums up to 150 litres.
How Does ASF L'Unidose Algae Control Work?
Algae and cyanobacteria can thrive when nutrients accumulate in aquarium water.
Fish waste, uneaten food and decomposing organic material all contribute nutrients to an aquarium. When these nutrients are available alongside suitable lighting and other environmental conditions, unwanted growth can become difficult to manage.
L'Unidose Algae Control introduces beneficial bacteria that compete for these nutrients.
The treatment programme is designed to work through several stages:
1. Help suppress unwanted growth
The bacterial formulation is intended to help reduce existing algae and cyanobacteria problems.
2. Reintroduce beneficial bacterial competition
Additional beneficial bacteria help consume nutrients that would otherwise remain available to algae and cyanobacteria.
3. Support ongoing nutrient management
As bacterial activity develops, the aquarium's filtration and regular maintenance help manage the resulting organic material and nutrient load.
This approach focuses on improving the aquarium environment rather than simply removing visible algae.
Designed for Freshwater Aquariums Up to 150L
This version of ASF L'Unidose Algae Control is intended for freshwater aquariums with a capacity of up to 150 litres.
It is particularly relevant for established tropical aquariums experiencing unwanted algae or cyanobacteria growth.
For best results, use the correct programme for your aquarium type and size.
Easy-to-Follow Single-Dose Treatment Programme
ASF L'Unidose uses individual treatment vials and an accompanying programme card to guide the dosing process.
Each vial is identified for a particular treatment day, helping you follow the programme without needing to measure liquid doses manually.
How to Use
-
Take the supplied programme card and record the date you begin treatment as Day 1.
-
Locate the vial marked for Day 1.
-
Detach the appropriate vial and shake well.
-
Tap the top of the vial to move any liquid away from the cap.
-
Carefully break open the vial.
-
Pour the entire contents into the aquarium.
-
Dispose of the empty vial and cap responsibly.
-
Follow the programme card for subsequent treatment days.
Important: Follow the dosing schedule included with your particular pack. Do not assume that a vial should be added every day unless the programme card instructs you to do so.
What Causes Algae and Cyanobacteria Problems?
Unwanted aquarium growth is rarely caused by one factor alone.
Common contributing factors include:
-
Excess nutrients from feeding and organic waste
-
Inadequate aquarium maintenance
-
Poor circulation or areas where waste accumulates
-
Lighting that is excessive for the aquarium's needs
-
An imbalance between nutrient availability and plant uptake
Beneficial bacteria can help with nutrient management, but correcting these underlying conditions is important for long-term results.
What Should You Do After the Treatment?
Once the algae or cyanobacteria problem has improved, continue maintaining the aquarium through regular water changes, appropriate feeding and filtration maintenance.
Aquarium Systems also recommends following its dedicated L'Unidose Maintenance Programme after completing algae control treatment.
This provides a longer-term approach to supporting aquarium biological balance.
Important Information
-
Intended for freshwater aquariums up to 150 litres.
-
Follow the supplied treatment programme exactly.
-
Do not exceed the recommended dosing schedule.
-
This is a bacterial treatment programme, not a substitute for regular aquarium maintenance.
-
Results depend on the underlying causes of algae growth and aquarium conditions.
-
Continue monitoring water parameters throughout treatment.
-
Confirm compatibility before use in aquariums containing particularly sensitive livestock.
Aquarium Haven Tip
Treat the cause of algae problems, not just the visible growth.
Before starting treatment, check your lighting schedule, feeding routine, nitrate and phosphate levels, and areas where organic waste may be collecting.
ASF L'Unidose Algae Control can help manage nutrient competition through beneficial bacteria, but long-term success also depends on correcting the conditions that allowed unwanted growth to develop.
