Everything you need to know
The Leopard Danio (3-3.5 cm) is a vibrant, fast-swimming community fish with golden tones and leopard-like spots. Peaceful, resilient, and energetic—perfect for planted tanks or lively mixed setups, especially when kept in groups.
The Leopard Danio (3-3.5 cm) is a striking spotted variant of the zebra danio, admired for its shimmering gold or silver body covered in bold, irregular dark spots. Its active behaviour makes it a delight to watch—it zooms through the middle to top levels of the aquarium, bringing constant life and motion.
These danios thrive in shoals, so keeping at least six helps them feel secure and reduces stress. They are hardy fish, adapting well to a range of water conditions: temperature in the lower to mid-tropical range (around 18-25 °C), pH somewhat flexible from slightly acidic to neutral or a little alkaline, and moderate hardness. A tank with open swimming space, some plants, and good filtration will suit them well.
Diet is straightforward—omnivorous. These fish will eat quality flakes or pellets, as well as frozen or live foods like brine shrimp or daphnia. Feeding small amounts several times a day ensures they stay healthy without fouling the water.
Leopard Danios typically live 3-5 years under good care. With their bold pattern, energetic personality, and ease of care, they’re great for both beginners and experienced aquarists wanting to add sparkle and movement to their tank.
